A couple of years ago I decided to do something with some of the art that I had from my dad’s old sketch book. My dad passed away when I was in middle school, but he had a profound and positive impact on my life and the lives of many who got to know him. Both my parents were big patrons of the arts and also enjoyed artistic and aesthetic hobbies from clay brooches and flower arranging to recording music and drawing sketches.
I have always wanted to find something to do with my dad’s old sketch book, but felt somewhat paralyzed by the prospect of “ruining” his work. These things are irreplaceable. But I eventually came to acknowledge that having his art sit on a shelf forever did not honor him either. Below is a collaboration between me and my dad that transcends time and space. Its collage, one of my favorite mediums, and having these hanging in my home makes me feel more connected to him.
